Matthew 27:29 (ASV)– “And they platted a crown of thorns and put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!”
Oh So Wrong
Christ my King mocked.
He is heir of all creation, the Sovereign King of kings, the source and sustain-er of our lives.
Yet, in hateful derision, merciless thorns now crown his head. The only sacred one, amid hatred and scorn, dips to bear thorny point and twisted briar.
Oh So Right
Mystically appropriate, Jesus accepts a crown of thorns.
The last Adam.
Resolute to rescue his people.
Behold the crown of thorns with the horror that is due it –Yet - Your sin; my sin, our sin triggered it being thrust upon him. A cosmic plan on a divine scale.
However, also behold the crown with humble joy. See Jesus there upon the cross bearing the shame, the insults, the spit, the beatings, and the horrors of Calvary.
But see him also gladly drink the eternal vat of condemnation that is due to sinners like us. See him do this magnificently, completely, powerfully, and gloriously! See him do it with the crown of the curse thrust upon his brow.
Can we now, for solemn minute, understand that without Jesus bearing that thorny crown, there is no solace, no free passage to that sacred city, the New Jerusalem; where we will enjoy the Giver of all life and ultimate freedom from sin’s lurk ‘evermore.
That mysterious coronation with its crown so rich. Rich because of who’s head it graced and how that head was set.
Draw now, near that cross and marvel at the great divide between love and sorrow, punctuated with glorious victory!
